Local police office hit by car in a parking lot

BETHLEHEM, NY (NEWS10) - - A local police officer injured their knee after being hit by a car driven by a fleeing shoplifting suspect. The suspect is now facing charges.

According to Bethlehem police, the officer was in the parking lot of the Glenmont Walmart Saturday afternoon taking a report for a property damage crash. The officer noticed a Walmart employee chasing a woman who allegedly stole something from the store.

Police say the officer ran towards the fleeing suspect, who had gotten into her car, and ordered the vehicle to stop. The car drove forward and hit the officer. Despite being struck, the officer managed to convince the suspect to stop the car.

Police arrested 58 year old Wendy Downey of Castleton. She was charged with felony counts of assault and endangerment and several misdemeanor charges.

The officer was transported to St. Peters Hospital for a knee injury.
