ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) - A local firefighter is fighting for his life.
He wasn't injured on the job. His wife says he's septic and the symptoms came on quickly and unexpectedly.
Josh Woodward works for Albany International Airport's Fire Department and volunteers for the North Bethlehem Fire Department as well.
A GoFundMe page has raised over $40,000. According to the page, Josh and his wife have two children who were recently sick with flu like symptoms.
Monday night, Josh mentioned he may have pulled a muscle under his arm and that it was sore.
The next day he spiked a fever, so he thought he caught what the kids had.
But a few days later the pain in his arm became excruciating, and the fever persisted.
So his wife took him to the emergency room, where doctors rushed him in for emergency surgery.
They believe the infection stemmed from a small cut near his arm or an ingrown hair.
By the time doctors started operating they found that the infection had spread to his heart, lungs, kidney, and liver.
He is on dialysis with a long road of recovery ahead.
