The quick actions of a local couple on vacation saved a young girl’s life.
The couple didn’t hesitate when the girl fell into a pool.
Jessica Campeta is a volunteer firefighter, and Matthew Colwell is a New York State trooper. They’re both from Hudson and were on vacation in Daytona Beach.
It was a normal day at the pool until they saw a 3-year-old girl fall into the water at their hotel. That’s when their training kicked in.
“Heard the mom screaming, we just jumped up, jumped in, got her out, and handed her off to Matt,” Campeta said. “We started working on her until paramedics showed up. Any longer and I don’t think she would have made it.”
“I would hope that anybody would’ve done the same thing, you know,” Colwell said. “Whether being police officer or not, firefighter or not.”
The couple revived the girl before paramedics arrived. Campeta and Colwell said that while they’re trained in CPR, it was the first time they had to actually perform it on someone.
