The busy holiday season can be prime time for thieves to target your home. Black Friday and Cyber Monday have come and gone.  Many big ticket items are already sitting in your home waiting to be opened or will be delivered to your doorstep.

If you are leaving town for the holidays or simply want to take security into your own hands there are several tools online to help you with your sense of security.  You can track your neighborhood crime statistics to find out how safe your neighborhood is on several different websites that offer crime maps for free of charge.

SafeWise.com lists five websites offering unique features to help you track trends around your neighborhood.

1. AreaVibes
Enter your state and city to find your neighborhood.  Their map will give you a livability score between 1-100.  The site will compare your neighborhood’s livability score to the national average.  The site also assigns letter grades from A to F based on several factors including crime.

2. NeighborhoodScout
The website provides crime statistics and important local data about your area.  You can compare neighborhoods based on crime rate, violent crime, and property crime.

3. CrimeReports
Maps out crime data gathered from more than 1,000 law enforcement agencies. You can search their map by region, address, or zip code. Different filters allow you to search by date range, day of the week or incident type. You can also sign up for alerts and register your home security camera.

4. SpotCrime
Is another crime mapping service which delivers crime alerts via email, and through several different social media platforms. Data is gathered through law enforcement agencies and news reports.

In addition to using these free services to track trends, remember to not leave packages at the door for a long period of time.  As an alternative to using your home address, you can have them delivered to your work address if no one will be around at home to bring them indoors.

If you are planning to leave for a holiday vacation have the local post office hold your mail until you get back.  This prevents your mailbox from filling up which can tip thieves off that no one is home.

You can also collect packages at the post office.  When you’re having something shipped, choose the Hold For Pickup Option, this allows the recipient to collect their packages at their local post office.
