Assemblyman John McDonald secured a $500,000 grant to help a municipal entity buy the Cohoes Community Center building.
Cohoes Mayor, Shawn Morse, stated that although he wants to see the community center reopen, he is against the city purchasing the building.
“The first thing I thought about is if I bought it, where was I going to come up with the half million dollars? And how long do I have to wait to get reimbursed? That just covers the cost of the building, not the repairs,” said Morse.
Instead, he would like to see the community center operate independently, but recieve support from both the city and the school district. Morse even suggested the possibilty of moving the city’s library into the building to combine resources.
Assemblyman John McDonald stated, ” I’ll be the first to tell you that I am not a fan of anybody owning that building except for the non-profit community center. But that being said, nobody is stepping up with a solution, and I’m stepping up with a solution, so let’s get something done.”
A community forum to further discuss possible plans to reopen the community center is expected to take place in the next couple weeks.
