Girl, 11, dies after tree falls on car in Newburgh

An 11-year-old girl died after being injured during severe thunderstorms in Orange County on Tuesday.

Police say the girl and her mother had just pulled into the driveway of their home along Robinson Avenue and were unloading their SUV when a gust of wind knocked a tree down on top of it, crushing the roof.

The girl was trapped inside and firefighters had to pull her out of the vehicle.

She was rushed to St. Lukes Hospital where she later died.

A neighbor says he was at work when it happened but when his brother called him to tell him, he rushed home.

“I came down here to see what was going on and I saw that and I just feel bad about it. I saw the fire and ambulance and policemen who were over here. There wasn’t much I could do about it, just watch,” Ramone said. “She was on the porch crying saying, ‘my daughter, my daughter’ and then I didn’t see her anymore and the cops were keeping everyone away.”

Police say because of the tragic nature of the incident and the young age of the victim, they will not be releasing her name.

The mother suffered minor injuries.

Schools in the area are closed for the day.
