Columbia Memorial Health recently launched an initiative to recognize the service of the region’s bravest by offering free annual physicals to volunteer firefighters in Columbia and Greene counties.
“We wanted to give our volunteer firefighters something to recognize their service and thank them for what they do for all of us,” said CMH Vice President of Medical Services Ronald Pope, DO. “We also wanted to take a more active role in helping them better manage the many health risks they face as firefighters.”
Firefighter wellness is essential to stemming line of duty deaths caused by medical conditions, which have been increasing nationally in recent years. Dr. Pope said that people in seemingly good health can have potentially serious underlying conditions that can be detected in a thorough physical exam.
This unique CMH community service program was recently featured in the September/October edition of the statewide magazine “The Volunteer Firefighter” published by the Firemen’s Association of New York State.
The program began earlier this year and is available at four CMH locations listed below:
