Calls are taking longer than normal at the Schenectady Fire Department since Sunday’s snowstorm. With a second storm hitting the area, crews are having to stop sometimes blocks away from calls because of cars and pedestrians blocking the streets.
Deputy Chief Gary Coppola said cars and pedestrians are inching further onto the roads preventing their trucks from getting down the streets.
The streets are already a tight squeeze for the trucks. And cars double-parking in the middle of the road make it impossible for crews to get to their final destination.
Once the trucks stop on icy roads, it’s hard for it to regain the traction to get going again.
The Schenectady Police Department is doing what they can to help. Sergeant Nick Mannix said the department is seeing an uptick in calls that fire crews are being blocked.
