A fire engulfed the Schroon Lake Community Church Wednesday afternoon.
The call for the fire came in around 3:15 p.m. Nine fire departments responded.
First responders worked hard to contain the blaze, but flames overtook the building.
A crowd gathered around the church to watch in awe as the blaze continued to burn. The church is known as a central hub for the community.
No injuries were reported, but the pastor’s house next to the church was partly destroyed. She was not home at the time.
The church was undergoing renovations as part of a Capital Improvement Project but is now a shell of a building.
“The community will come together, and it will be rebuilt, I’m sure, but it takes a piece right out of you,” Town Supervisor Michael Marnell said.
Route 9 is closed to traffic while crews remain on scene.
