Two major early morning fires tear through 12 buildings in Albany

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) - Fire crews responded to two major fires early Sunday morning in the City of Albany, on Sheridan Avenue and Quail Street.

The Albany Fire Department received the call around 3:13 a.m. for a fire at 334 Sheridan Avenue. When crews arrived on scene they found heavy fire in the building which quickly spread to adjoining buildings. In total, six apartment buildings sustained serious damage from the fire, according to Albany City Fire Chief Joseph Gregory.

By 5:30 a.m. Sunday, Chief Gregory said the fire on Sheridan Avenue was mostly contained, with firefighters working on putting out hotspots.

Five of the six affected buildings were occupied at the time of the fire. According to the Red Cross, nine families, approximately 27 people have been displaced. Luckily no one, residents or firefighters, was injured in the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Chief Gregory says the Albany Fire Department also responded to a structure fire on Quail St. about an hour after the fire on Sheridan Avenue began. Officials do not believe the fires to be related.

The fire on Quail Street spread to six apartment buildings, bringing the total number of buildings affected by fire in Albany Sunday morning to twelve.

Chief Gregory says one resident was injured in the Quail Street fire and taken to Albany Medical Center. No firefighters were injured. According to the Red Cross, 17 families, approximately 40 people have been displaced from Quail Street.

Albany, Troy, Watervliet, and Green Island Fire Departments all responded to Quail Street.
