The New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is reminding New Yorkers to take steps to prevent bears from accessing food sources like bird feeders and garbage.
The DEC says due to poor natural food availability last fall, bears have begun seeking out food sources around homes as they come out of winter hibernation.
New Yorkers are advised to take down bird feeders by April 1 and store garbage inside secure buildings.
The DEC says they have received several reports of bears knocking down bird feeders to eat the seed.
In New York, it is illegal to intentionally feed bears.
