Crews battled a house fire near St. Peter’s Hospital Monday night.
The fire took place at a two-story home at 542 New Scotland Ave, just down the street from St. Peter’s Hospital. Firefighters say the building housed seven people living in five apartments. Luckily everyone was able to make it out of the building safely.
The 911 call for the fire came in around 10:15 p.m. Monday. Firefighters responded to the scene within two minutes, but say the fire put up a fight. Fire Chief Gregory said the buildings five apartment divisions made the interior of the building extremely complex, with many places for the fire to “hide.
Firefighters believe the fire began on the first floor, but Chief Gregory says the fire continued to gain in intensity, even after fire crews hit it with water. First responders entered the house and focused much of their efforts on the upper level. Flames could be seen coming out of the attic.
All told, some 40 firefighters were called to help get the flames under control.
New Scotland Avenue was closed while crews battled the fire, but has since been reopened.
