Cohoes mayor proposes plan to save community center in first public appearance since arrest

Local

In his first public appearance since Cohoes Mayor Shawn Morse was arrested by the FBI, he and other public officials held a public forum to address the closed community center.

The non-profit organization which owns the gym, weight room, pool and daycare suddenly closed the building in October of 2018. The president of the organization said at the meeting there is a $375,000 debt, and is losing $12,000 every month it’s closed.

Assemblyman John McDonald secured a $500,000 grant from the state, which is meant to help taxing entities.

Since the Cohoes Community Center is a non-profit, he’s been looking for government entities such as the City of Cohoes, Albany County or the Cohoes City School District to partner with and potentially purchase the community center.

Mayor Morse said at the meeting he would be in favor of combining the public library with the community center at the Remsen Street location.

Morse says the library needs about $1 million worth of work, and could go in place of where daycare was held at the community center.
