City of Rensselaer Mayor Daniel Dwyer has passed away.
City officials say Mayor Dwyer passed away early Tuesday morning and was surrounded by family.
Mayor Dwyer was a Korean War veteran, and served the City for several years, starting in 1963 as a member of the Civil Service Commission, from 2002 to 2005 as chair of the Zoning Commission before his 2005 election as Mayor.
Mayor Dwyer is survived by his two children and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Kathleen of 51 years.
“As a testament to Mayor Dwyer, he leaves the city in strong hands with Mayor Rich Mooney, the Common Council, and all City employees, who believe, just as Mayor Dwyer did, that Rensselaer is in the midst of a resurgence for new development and new investment within the city. The thoughts and prayers of all the City of Rensselaer are with the Dwyer family during this difficult time,” City officials said in a statement.
