Black bear spotted in local community

People in one local community welcomed an unexpected visitor ino their backyard on Tuesday.

It started with a few knocks on the window and then a quick escape.

“The paws on that window it was no fun haha,” Ella Erceg, a 91-year-old Athens resident, said.

“He climbed that tree like you and I walk. He just swiftly went up that tree knocking down dead branches,” Rick Surrano said.

A black bear has been spotted throughout the Town of Athens and has been making appearances in people’s backyards.

Erceg says she’s still shaken up after spotting the bear outside of her home.

“That’s close! I don’t want to see it anymore.”

The bear was so comfortable that even stopped for a snack. He took this bird feeder and ripped it off of this hook and started munching away.

“The bear was trying to get the feeder down. He was banging on my window and I was afraid he was going to break my window.”

“You can kind of see the little path of where he was and I think he went up in this tree here. He then changed his mind and took off,” Joseph Zanchelli, Erceg’s son-in-law, said.

After taking off, the bear didn’t seem to make it too far. NEWS10 ABC traveled down the road and found the bear in a tree less than a mile away.

“Yeah, I was sitting on the deck and he was lying right down. I would talk to him and I called him BooBoo, of course,” Surrano said.

The bear, or as some may call him BooBoo, was last seen sleeping in that tree. Neighbors say there is no telling where he will be spotted next. One thing is for sure, he definitely loves bird food.

“I’m afraid he is coming back, he knows where the food is now,” Erceg said.
