Alleged ‘porch pirate’ cleared in Scotia incident

Scotia Police updating NEWS10 on an alleged package theft, after home security camera video appeared to show a man taking a package from someone’s doorstep.

Police say they were contacted by the man captured on the video after seeing the story — who explained he is a contracted delivery person who was working without a uniform.  The man told police he was there earlier in the day to drop off the package and had returned to scan it. Police consider the case a misunderstanding and the investigation is closed.

Police do still warn people the holiday season is a busy time for thieves who troll area neighborhoods looking for packages left on doorsteps. He says sometimes they actually follow delivery trucks looking for a potential target.

Scotia Police Chief Pete Frisoni suggests removing all the temptation from the start. He says you can ask a neighbor to accept the delivery, you can require a signature, or have the package delivered to your workplace.
