Sam “The Bugler” Grossman, will retire on September 3, after 25-years of calling racing fans to the post at the Saratoga Race Course.

NYRA announced Saturday that Grossman will play his final “Call to the Post” on Labor Day, before that day’s 11th race at the Saratoga Race Course. To honor his many years as a Saratoga summertime icon, the fifth race of the day will be named in his honor.

“Sam is a man of great musical talent who has entertained our guests for 25 years at Saratoga, Belmont Park and Aqueduct Racetrack,” said NYRA CEO and President Chris Kay. “He is truly a fan favorite. While Sam is retiring from his full-time duties with NYRA, we hope to see him back here next summer at our beloved Saratoga.”

Grossman grew up on Long Island as part of a family of classically trained musicians and began playing the trumpet at 6-years-old. He played his first “Call” in 1993.

“This has been the best time of my life. I have worked with brilliant people who humble me daily. The fans in Saratoga are the most vibrant and colorful people I’d ever want to spend a summer with,” said Grossman.
