JOHNSTOWN, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Imagine not being able to hear clearly for a moment.
Now imagine having that feeling for more than 60 years. That was the reality for one local man, until Thursday when he was given the gift of sound.
David Sweet is a 65-year-old retired logger and grandfather of six. He’s had issues with his hearing since he was born but was able to hear clearly for the first time in his life.
“A little bit of static in here,” Sweet said after getting his hearing aids.
That static was actually the fan on in the room. Sweet has never been able to pick up on sounds like that.
“That fan. I see the fan and it moves around, but I don’t hear it. With those, I can hear the fan. It’s going to be great it really is.”
Sweet was born with a hole in his right ear drum and recently discovered his ability to hear out of his left ear was failing him too.
“I’m really excited. I knew I needed one. I didn’t know I needed two. That really surprised me.”
Sweet doesn’t have insurance and thought he was going to have to deal with his hearing loss. That’s when he found out about the Miracle-Ear Foundation and applied for the program.
“If they get approved, they get two refurbished hearing aids for no out of pocket cost,” Nicole Stock, hearing instrument specialist, said.
Stock is Sweet’s hearing instrument specialist and fitted him with his new hearing aids.
“To be able to finally hear clearly most of the time is definitely going to change his life for the better.”
The foundation helps provide hearing aids to children and adults all over North America who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford them
“A lot of times people start crying and that’s really really rewarding to me that I’m helping to better someone’s quality of life.”
Sweet finally able to hear his wife Cindy with both of his ears for the first time ever.
“Can you hear me?” “Yep” “I love you.” “I love you too.”
The Miracle-Ear Foundation has donated nearly 10,000 hearing aids to almost 6,000 people since the organization started in 1990.
