Local chefs compete in ‘Cornival’ challenge to raise money for food pantries

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – On Thursday, the “cornival” was the place to be for your lunch break.

It’s an event pitting local chefs against each other to create the best tomato-themed dishes.

For the second year, SEFCU and CDPHP teamed up to raise funds for the Food Pantries for the Captial District, a coalition of 56 area food shelves that provide 2.5 million meals to the hungry each year.

It costs $10 to sample all the dishes, with all of the money going straight to feeding the hungry.

“For us, one dollar can provide up to 6.25 pounds of food, which is approximately five meals,” Natasha Pernicka, of the Food Pantries for the Capital District, said. “So for every dollar, you’re basically providing enough food for five meals.”

There was also a chance to donate directly to the food pantries with donation boxes out for canned food and baby diapers.
