TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Every second Saturday of the month for the last five years, those with questions about their heart health have the chance to go for a walk with two local doctors.

This Saturday was the latest “Just Walk With a Doc” event, at Riverfront Park in Troy.

Walkers met up first to sign in, and then walked for an hour with Dr. Robert Benton, and others from St. Mary’s Hospital.

Dr. Benton says Riverfront Park is the event’s summer location. During the winter months the walk is held in the Gymnasium at Sage College of Albany.

We walk with patients for four to five miles,” said Dr. Benton. “We talk to them about health related issues, and sometimes give a little lecture.

At one of those lectures, Jean Gochee, a former patient of Dr. Benton, heard the doctor speak about the Walk With A Doc program.

“And he talked about this, and then I decided I better get going and hope it’s not too late,” she said.

So Gochee showed up early to sign up, and head out on her walk with the docs.

“It’s going good, but as you can see, I can’t keep up,” said Gochee. “Since this is my first walk, I’ll better next time, I’m sure.”

Dr. Benton says that an hour a day of moderate exercise can mean a gain of two hours of life.

If you missed Saturday’s walk, you can meet up with the docs on August 13, and get in an hour of walking, and some answers to those nagging health questions.
