SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested 11 people they say are in the country illegally.
Ten men and a 17-year-old male were arrested. Three of the adults are facing federal felony charges for illegal re-entry into the United States.
The subject of illegal immigration has become a controversial subject in the past few months. Two weeks ago, 16 undocumented immigrants were also arrested in Saratoga Springs.
Many people have different opinions on the topic.
“They’re here illegally; they’ve broken the law,” Janetlyn McLain said.
McLain feels the law is being upheld.
“If you’d like to come to America, I think you need to do so in the manner in which the government has set forth, and if you don’t do that, then you need to be deported,” she said.
But not everyone feels the same way.
“I think that it will cripple the entire economy,” Gigi Stetler said.
Stetler is concerned for the city of Saratoga Springs where businesses like the race track rely on immigrants.
“We need to wake up and start to realize that’s who does the work that nobody else wants to do,” she said.
She said it won’t help if ICE keeps coming back.
“If the race track has to shut down because there’s nobody to take care of the horses,” she said. “What’s gonna happen?”
McLain, however, disagrees.
“I think that the race track will do just fine,” McLain said. “I think that people do work legally at the track as well as illegally.”
She feels it comes down to what’s right and wrong.
“You broke the law; you need to be held responsible for your actions,” she said.
The adults were taken to Albany County Correctional Facility. The minor was served with a notice to appear in immigration court and was taken to the Department of Health and Human Service’s Office of Refugee Resettlement for placement.
