TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – If you walk around the City of Troy, seeing graffiti is probably not uncommon and now a new group hopes to put an end to it.
Neighborhood activists called the “Graffiti Busters” are helping property owners remove graffiti in Troy.
“Hey, when you have graffiti on your wall, who are you going to call? Graffiti Busters!” Lynn Kopa, Washington Park Association President, said. “It seemed pretty relevant since we saw the Ghostbusters movie being released and we love costumes.”
Instead of taking down the supernatural, they’ve got their eyes set on something else – ridding buildings of graffiti vandalism.
“We’re a team and we’re ready to take action,” Andrea Daley, of Graffiti Busters, said.
It’s funded by a $500 Neighborhood Improvement Grant from the Troy City Council, the group consists of community leaders and activists.
Coming together with one goal in mind.
“We’re going to beautify these neighborhoods and we’re going to keep going step-by-step until everyone takes pride in their properties and we just make it a wonderful place to live work and play,” Daley said.
Mayor Patrick Madden seconds that notion.
“You’re seeing a community in action,” Mayor Patrick Madden said. “You’re seeing people banding together and addressing a problem that’s in their neighborhood. We care. You don’t come here and do this to our neighborhood, whether tagging a building, throwing a soda bottle on the ground, or whatever. People care about the look of their neighborhood. We are going to address it. We are going to clean up.”
It’s estimated there are more than 50 graffiti marks throughout the City of Troy.
According to the group, a property owner can request a free evaluation from members of the Graffiti Busters team. The group will then arrive with a removal kit containing different products.
Once the proper remover and tools are identified, property owners will be provided a voucher to a local store carrying the product. Graffiti Busters can also supply the products.
