Day with Police becomes kid’s dream come true

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A local 6 year old got the chance to make his dream come true by spending a day at the police department.

Police officers at the Schenectady Police Department often put on gear when responding to a call, but on Tuesday, the SWAT team was called in for a special assignment: making one kid’s dream come true.

Anytime an ambulance or police car drives by their house with the sirens blazing, Connor Mayette rushes to watch them from the front porch.

“My son goes to sleep every day talking about police officers, and the SWAT team,” his mother, Heidi Mayette, said. “He dreams about police officers.”

Connor has a rigorous schedule. He trains for his dream job during the day by building with Legos and watching YouTube videos of his heroes in action.

He even gets his two dogs in on it.

“I pretend to be a police officer and arrest the dogs for pretend,” he said.

On Tuesday, he got to see where the bad guys go in real life at the Schenectady Police Station.

“The welcoming that we got when he came in, he was like a superstar,” Heidi said.

Connor got the grand tour meeting the station’s canine, trying on the gear, and seeing the police cars. His favorite part? Meeting a SWAT team member.

Most 6 year olds might not even know what a SWAT team is, which is why his mother wanted to go above and beyond to nurture her child’s passion.

“It’s important that when your kid tells you they wanna be something when they grow up, it doesn’t matter how old they are, get them involved,” she said.

Schenectady Police Sgt. Matt Dearing said they often do tours for groups of kids, but this was the first time they’ve had such special treatment.

“Just basically to get out and show that, look, you can come up to us,” he said. “We’re a normal person like everyone else, so come and say hi.”

Police hit the mark with Connor, and they’re looking forward to getting his application when he’s old enough.
