SPRAKERS, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Two people have been charged after 48 cats and one dog were surrendered or seized from a Montgomery County home. The New York State Police said Kelly Simpson, 44, and Cassandra Simpson, 19, both of Root, were arrested on April 15.
“We had cats with huge worm loads, really skinny, really bad body condition, just from lack of proper nutrition and lack of water,” said Audrey Stern, intake coordinator for Animal Lovers Rescue, one of the organizations that took in some of the 43 cats that were voluntarily surrendered.
Stern shared medical records with News10 from recent veterinary examinations of some of the cats, which show flea dirt, ear mites, respiratory infection and other conditions.
With five cats needing obvious veterinary attention, the New York State Police executed a search warrant of the Sprakers home, seizing five additional cats and a dog.

“They [NYSP] had also asked if we would be willing to take the additional cats when they served the search warrant, we said that we were more than happy to,” Stern explained.
When visiting the home, Cassandra Simpson spoke to News10 about the situation, “I just want everyone to know that me and my mom are not monsters. We really cared about cats, we always have.”
She says the family initially had several cats, but after they continued reproducing, it became too challenging to support the dozens of animals, “I do love my cats, and I don’t want people to think I never did. I did try, the best that I could,” Simpson said.
“I don’t think that these people didn’t love them. I think that now they’re going to be able to someone that can properly care for them and show them the same type of love as well,” Stern said, adding this case stresses the importance of spaying and neutering pets.
Once the cats taken in by Animal Lovers are cleared medically, Stern says they will be available for adoption.
Kelly and Cassandra Simpson were released on appearance tickets and are due in Root Town Court on Monday, April 18th.
