ALBANY, N.Y. (WIVB) — Vaccines have played an important role in slowing the spread of the virus, and New York, Vermont, and Massachusetts are all getting closer to reaching their vaccination goals.
According to the CDC, 69.5% of eligible New Yorkers have gotten at least one vaccine dose. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has said he will lift most restrictions once 70% of eligible people have their first shot.
Meanwhile, Vermont has the highest vaccination rate in the country, with over 79% of eligible people having at least one dose. Gov. Phil Scott has said he will lift all restrictions once 80% of people have one shot. The state was about 2,000 people short of that threshold as of Thursday.
And Massachusetts has the second-highest vaccination rate per 100,000 residents, trailing only behind Vermont. Gov. Charlie Baker has signaled his hope that the commonwealth can reach its goal of having 4.1 million fully vaccinated residents within the next couple of weeks.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Saturday that according to Johns Hopkins University, New York State has the nation’s lowest 7-day average COVID-19 positivity rate at 0.44%.
“We’re beating back COVID-19 across the state and New York has the nation’s lowest 7-day average positivity rate, but it’s going to take more vaccinations to get us across the finish line,” Governor Cuomo said. “The more shots we get in arms, the healthier our state becomes, and that’s why we’re offering exciting incentives for vaccinations. If New Yorkers who haven’t yet gotten the shot do so promptly, we can defeat COVID-19 for good and rebuild our state for a brighter future.”
In a press release from the governor’s office, officials say all state mass vaccination sites are now open to eligible New Yorkers for walk-in vaccination on a first-come, first-serve basis. You can also schedule an appointment on the Am I Eligible App or by calling (833) NYS-4-VAX.
