LIVINGSTON, N.Y. (NEWS10) – The woman who police said placed her baby in a dumpster after giving birth while she was working at a convenience store had her charges reduced.

Tara Tomlin is accused of putting her newborn son in a plastic bag and then putting him into a dumpster outside the Xtra Mart on Route 9 in Livingston in November 2015. The baby was later found dead.

Tomlin was charged with Murder in the Second Degree, but the charges were reduced to Manslaughter in court on Thursday.

“What happens next is we enter into discussions or negotiations about a resolution that we can live with,” defense attorney Michael Howard said. “I’m very happy that murder charges have been withdrawn by the people.”

The manslaughter charge carries up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
