ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A group of local EMTs went into work only to find out they are out of a job.

Capital District Ambulance closed its doors Friday morning after it was bought out by Mohawk Ambulance Service. Employees say it came as a sudden shock.

Capital District Ambulance has been around for nearly 50 years. Within hours, their garage is locked, and a sign hangs on its door, telling people they are closed for good.

Chetan Keith Stinson has been an EMT with Capital District ambulance for nine months. That all came to a screeching halt on Thursday night.

“I came in at 7 p.m. last night and was told I no longer had a job,” Stinson said.

Capital District employees knew of the impending takeover but expected a couple of months to pass, before anything happened.

“And then yesterday at about 230 p.m., I was advised by ownership, to call and terminate all of my employees because Mohawk Ambulance Service has taken us over effective 7 a.m. this morning,” Patrick Boccio, Asst. Chief of Capital District Ambulance, said.

Thirty-five employees were fired and are angry after not getting any notice.

“The owners said nothing to us. We haven’t heard anything from him at all,” Stinson said.

As crews take away the company’s vehicles, the owners are noticeably absent.

NEWS10 ABC reached out to the company’s president. His attorney says one of the co-owners became paralyzed after an accident and the family-owned business just wasn’t what it used to be.

Its employees say they deserved a heads up. Instead, they pack up their belongings, unsure of their future and financial stability.

“Yeah, no one really had second plans at this time,” Quinn Malone, an EMT and driver, said.

“It’s a pretty terrible situation considering it was July 20. Rent’s due in 10 days. It’s a terrible thing to do to these kids,” Boccio said.
