Albany deputy undergoing surgery after truck crash in Colonie

Albany County

COLONIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A crash on Central Avenue Monday morning involving a semi-truck and an Albany County Sheriff’s Office vehicle sent Deputy Joseph Iachetta to the hospital in serious condition.

Around 6:15 a.m., a Price Chopper tractor-trailer and the on-duty Albany County Sheriff’s Office K-9 deputy were traveling east when the truck turned right into the Colonie Price Chopper at Colonie Plaza. Police said Iachetta’s SUV hit the trailer and got stuck underneath it. According to Sheriff Craig Apple, the 30-year-old was unconscious for about 30 to 40 minutes before being extricated by first responders.

The seven-year veteran was taken to Albany Medical Center where he underwent surgery and is expected to have another surgery Monday night, according to Sheriff Apple.

Apple said Iachetta will have a long road to recovery while he and his wife are expecting their second child in a few weeks.

At the scene, NEWS10’s Giuliana Bruno reported that the doors of the sheriff vehicle 432 were knocked off when it collided with the Market 32/Price Chopper truck.

The crash closed all lanes of Central Avenue for about an hour. The eastbound lanes were closed until about 2 p.m.

Although the K-9 was extricated from the vehicle and appeared uninjured, they took the dog to a local veterinarian to be sure.

Police said the truck driver was uninjured and is cooperating with police.
