Former police chief to face federal fraud charges

LEE, Mass., - A former police chief in Lee who has been accused of fraud will now face new federal charges.

Joseph Buffis is accused of taking more than $50,000 that was intended for Christmas gifts for children. Twelve indictments were issued by a federal Grand Jury this week.

Buffis is now being charged with wire fraud, mail fraud, and money laundering.

Federal prosecutors say Buffis used the money for "personal use" and only one needy family between the years of 2007 and 2011 received any money.
