Sheriff: Two dead after crash causes car to burst into flames

GRANVILLE, N.Y. – Two people are dead after a motor vehicle accident in the Town of Granville.

According to the Washington County Sheriff's, on Friday around 5:18 a.m., officers responded to the two car accident on County Route 25.

Upon arrival to the scene, a Dodge Intrepid with Vermont tags was found engulfed in flames. A Chevy Camaro with Vermont tags was found to be in the westbound lane and both vehicles had sustained heavy front end damage.

The vehicles were only occupied by the drivers, who were both pronounced dead at the scene.

The names of the drivers will be released pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.

A witness to the crash told authorities that she had been driving east towards Vermont on County Route 25. The Dodge Intrepid came up behind her in the eastbound lane and had passed her seconds before the crash. The witness stated that this happened on a double solid line in a no passing zone as they approached a hillcrest.

The Dodge Intrepid then crested the hill, according to the witness. At the same time, the Chevy Camaro came up the hill in the westbound lane heading towards the Village of Granville.

The two vehicles then collided head on in the westbound lane.

The impact of the crash caused the Dodge Intrepid to drive off the eastbound shoulder and the Chevy Camaro came to rest in the westbound lane.

The Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by Granville EMS, Granville Fire, Middle Granville Fire and Granville PD.
