Fort Plain mayor applies for state buyout program one year after flooding

Posted:
FORT PLAIN, N.Y. – It has been over a year since residents in Fort Plain suffered from the devastation of flooding in the village and now a buyout can held more residents improve their lives.

Mayor Guy Barton says the village submitted the necessary paperwork and has been approved for the state buyout program. He says 10 to 15 homeowners are eligible to receive that money.

In June 2013, flash flooding destroyed several dozen homes and businesses. However, many have come back. There are now signs of progress that can be seen throughout the village.

The State Department of Transportation has also improved the creek, making it wider.

Barton says the buyout is another step forward.

“We are on the buyout program. Early in the spring, we had the people from Texas, which the state of New York had employed to come in here to take a look. They didn't give us the complete data, which we needed because they're not from New York,” said Barton.

Despite those complications, homeowners who are eligible can begin applying. The state will ultimately decide who receives that money.
