Runaway bulldozer rides down Albany tracks

ALBANY, N.Y. – A bulldozer on fire was traveling down train tracks in Albany Tuesday.

A bulldozer on fire was riding down train tracks near 8 Railroad Ave. in Albany Tuesday. Fire crews said Amtrak contracted an independent company to lay down new tracks.

While contractors were working, a bulldozer suddenly caught fire, according to Albany Fire Battalion Chief William Moore. Moore said the operator tried to put the machine in the neutral position, but the bulldozer kept riding.

“It was in operation. There was somebody on the dozer,” Moore explained. “It caught on fire, and he threw it in neutral and jumped off but with the dozer on fire something may have slipped in the transmission and ended up in reverse.”

Moore said there was no significant damage done to the tracks, but things could have been much worse. Propane tanks were at the end of the tracks.

Crews were happy they reached the dozer in time, but they are not sure what caused the fire.

“What reason it started on fire, we don’t know, yet,” Moore said. “That will be investigated.”

Fire crews stopped the bulldozer by unhooking the batteries after they extinguished the fire. There were no serious injuries.
