Altamont man’s 150-plus acres of land gets preserved

ALTAMONT, N.Y.—A local man's hope to have his 150-plus acres of land preserved became a reality Tuesday.

Doctor Milford Becker had the foresight to buy the land and eventually preserve it back in the sixties.

Linda Becker said it was a blessing to see her father's wish come true.

Dr. Becker was a well-known man in the Altamont community. He was a veterinarian who owned 156 acres of land along the Bozen Kill.

“His interest in preserving the land went back to the seventies when the Bozen kill was threatened by the building of I-88 which was due to go up on the upper part of the Bozen kill,” said Mark King, MHLC Executive Director.

Dr.Becker reached out to the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy (MHLC) to discuss ways to preserve the land fifteen years ago.

“He loved the land, he walked the land. He knew every tree, all the birds. He would sing the bird songs and whistle the bird songs,” said Linda Becker.

Before he could see the land completed, Dr.Becker passed away in 2007.

The MHLC said it was a long time coming, but they finally announced this morning that they acquired the Becker family property along with the neighboring 27 acres to create a new preserve.

“Any people in Altamont and around the community can enjoy this beautiful scenery, the stream, the mountains and everything else,” said Becker.

The new preserve will be called the Becker Preserve on Bozen Kill and is scheduled to open next year.
