DELMAR, N.Y. – Fire officials and hazmat crews are on scene at a Delmar home Friday night after chemicals were found inside.

The New York State Police, Bethlehem Fire Department, Elsmere Fire Department and multiple hazmat crews are on scene at a home on Paxwood Drive in Delmar. Police said a man who lived at 18 Paxwood Dr. passed away, and his family was cleaning out the home Friday when they found chemicals inside.

Police said they were called, and though they are not sure what the chemicals are, the chemicals are being removed from the home to be examined in a lab.

“The gentleman who passed away at the home some time back had items from his history that go back several decades, so to be cautious the items are secured and going to be brought to the lab for analysis tonight,” Lt. Brian Colwell with the State Police said.

Police said residents are not in danger, but neighbors said they were told to stay inside.
