Fundraiser held to honor local vets who died in battle

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Local veterans who gave their lives in more recent combat missions were remembered in a special way Wednesday.

A fundraiser was held at the Union Gables in Saratoga with all the money being divided up between five veterans organizations: The Ben Osborn Memorial Fund, the Capt. John McKenna Courtesy Room, Taylor’s Heroes, the Gold Star Mothers and Uncle Shawn’s Hugs.

Shawn Martin was a marine killed in Iraq in 2007. His mother, Dawn Martin, helped organize the event and talked about Shawn and the unique name of her cause.

“My son was a big guy, and he was a hugger,” she said. “He hugged everybody, and he had great big arms and broad shoulders, and he hugged you. You knew you were hugged.”

The money raised will be used to make warm blankets that will be given to needy families.
