Work resumes on Troy’s Riverfront Staircase after dangerous solvents were found

TROY, N.Y. - Work on Troy’s Riverfront Staircase is back on after construction was halted when workers found dangerous solvents at the site.

The Collar City finally received the green light from the DEC Wednesday morning, now calling the site safe.

A lot containing rock and rubble is slated to transform into a grand staircase and deck overlooking the Hudson River by the fall.

However, a few weeks ago, there was a bit of a snag when workers smelled something after excavating the area.

Officials say solvents like Toluenen, Benzyne, and Napothyne, were found after Troy contacted the DEC to start taking samples. The hazardous solvents would have an effect on the nervous system.

Work on  the $735,000 stairway project, which will connect River Street to River Front Park, was delayed as the city tested the area and allowed DEC the review the site.

“Fortunately the clay kept it exactly where it was,” said Andrew Kreshik.

Assistant City Planner Andrew Kreshik says the compounds likely came from cleaning presses that were located next door to the site, where the Troy Record used to be.

“Cleaning those presses probably involved the use of these types of solvents,” explained Kreshick.

Kreshik says eventually the compounds will all be sealed and unable to move through the soil after capping the site and laying the ground work for the a completed staircase by the fall.

“This deck will provide people with the ability to sit and enjoy coffee while they have a view of the river,” Kreshick said.

Any excavated areas that have the compound will need to be disposed of properly.
