ULSTER, N.Y. – The New York State Police arrested a Lake Katrine man for allegedly flying a drone near a medical facility.
Police responded to a call of an individual flying an aerial drone equipped with a video camera in close proximity to the Mid-Hudson Medical Group Facility in the town of Ulster. An investigation revealed that David Beesmer flew an aerial drone about ten to 15 feet from the windows of the facility.
Police said several of the windows were those of examination rooms occupied by patients at the time. The patients and medical staff observed the drone, according to police.
Beesmer is known as “Front Row Dave” online. He spends his time putting together live performances of bands and recently bought a drone.
Beesmer took his mother to a doctor’s appointment at the Mid-Hudson Medical Facility this week and took video of the building while his mother was being seen. He said he went back into the hospital, told a receptionist what he had done, and asked if the company was interested in having the footage.
Another hospital worker then approached Beesmer and told him she had a concern of privacy for patients, according to Beesmer. The 49-year-old was later arrested for Unlawful Surveillance in the Second Degree because state police said the people inside the facility had a “high expectation of privacy” and Beesmer violated that.
Mid-Hudson Medical Facility did not have a comment on the incident.
Beesmer declined to comment following the advice of his lawyer, but he did write the following message on his Facebook page:
“Yesterday I made a huge error in judgement....Everyone that knows me knows I own a drone now.....Monday a new Medical Facility opened in the Town of Ulster close to where I live.....I am so very proud of this facility and that someone has done something positive with the property that has been abandoned for many years.....I took my mom to a doctors appointment there.....and I took my drone up in t...he air to capture some very brief footage to show them.......I took the footage and went straight inside to tell them who I am and that I have some excellent footage.....I was referred by the receptionist to another person who gave me the card to the owners of the building and was told I can contact them...after that while waiting for Mom another person from the facility came up and told me of her concern of privacy....I assured her my camera cannot see inside windows and went out and got the footage to show her......she agreed that you cannot see any people only the building....and told me that the footage looks great and to contact the owners....as they definitely need promotion for this brand new building only two days in use...
I truly realize that I should have asked first but did not think it would be an issue....only to discover that it sure is...
I understand that people inside were alarmed....however as you can see from the footage I posted that there is no way that my camera can see through tinted windows.....I know that but understand that they do not...
The fact that I went straight in and told them certainly makes it obvious that I did not do this for any NEGATIVE reasons.....only to do good!
I asked my Fans, Friends and Family support during this time.....
Who knows where this will end, but one thing is for sure....i made a mistake because of my lack of knowledge..
I will not stop droning....this is the wave of the future...and I WILL be a part of it...”
Beesmer is expected in the Town of Ulster Court on July 22 for a plea hearing.
