NEW YORK (AP) - A Tunisian man prosecutors said was eager to harm America has been sentenced by a judge in New York to the 15 months he has already served in prison.
Ahmed Abassi was sentenced Wednesday in federal court in Manhattan by Judge Miriam Goldman Cedarbaum. He was held for deportation.
Abassi pleaded guilty last month to lying about why he came to the United States in 2013.
Prosecutors once described him as intent on committing acts of terrorism and developing a network of terrorists. But they dropped the most inflammatory claims and the most serious charges as the case fizzled.
The government admitted Abassi had refused an invitation to join a man later charged in Toronto with conspiring to derail a train between New York and Montreal.
