TUSCALOOSA, AL -

For the first time, Leanna Harris, the mother of a child killed in a hot car in Atlanta back in June, gives her side of the tragedy.

A statement released this week from Leanna Harris’ attorney describes what the mother has been going through.

Justin Ross Harris, the child's father, is charged with the murder of the couple’s 22-month-old son. Investigators said Harris left the child in their hot car for more than seven hours.

Tyler Bryan said he played little league sports and went to high school and college with Ross Harris, the man accused of killing his child.

Bryan said the man described in Harris' hearing is not the Ross Harris that he knew. In fact, both of their wives were pregnant with their first children at the same time.

“We laughed about how grown up we were. I was excited. He seemed very excited, you know so did she. She and my wife sort of compared their development I guess," he said.

But some have scrutinized the lack of emotion Leanna Harris showed in court during her husband’s hearing.

Her attorney, Lawrence Zimmerman, said she is grieving in her own way.

“Leanna Harris is living every parent's nightmare - the child she bore and loved every moment of his life has died. For most parents, it is difficult, if not impossible, to comprehend such a thing. But for Leanna, that nightmare is all too real. She will never again be able to tuck him into bed at night and return later to check on him," read a statement from Harris released by Zimmerman.

The statement goes on to say that the media attention is making the grieving more difficult for Leanna.

Meanwhile, Bryan said he's just trying to process the story.

“The Ross that I knew is not capable of this. If you know, if that's the same Ross that he always is then that makes it simple, but if there are other circumstances in play who knows.”
