Crews repairing 2 water main breaks in Syracuse

Posted: Updated:

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Public works crews are busy repairing two water main breaks in downtown Syracuse that have closed several streets and left some workers and residents without water.

The city's Department of Public Works tells local media that both breaks happened around 8 a.m. Wednesday.

One of the broken pipes is under the intersection of East Onondaga and East Jefferson streets, near the Onondaga County Courthouse. The other broke at the intersection of South Clinton and West Washington streets.

Officials say the water shutdowns and repairs could take up to 10 hours.

In March, Mayor Stephanie Miner told a U.S. Senate public works committee that her city is averaging more than one water main break a day because many of the pipes were installed more than a century ago.
