300 soldiers welcomed home at Fort Drum

Posted: Updated:

FORT DRUM, N.Y. (AP) - About 300 soldiers from the Army's 10th Mountain Division are back with their families after a nine-month deployment to Afghanistan.

Members of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team were welcomed back to Fort Drum in northern New York in a brief ceremony Tuesday afternoon. It's the second group of 3rd Brigade Combat Team members to return home out of about 2,100 deployed to Regional Command-East to help develop the Afghan National Security Forces.

The remaining 1,700 brigade members will be sent home in the coming months as the United States winds down its military operations in Afghanistan.

Four of the brigade's members were killed during this most recent deployment.

Army officials say about 3,200 members of the 10th Mountain Division remain in Afghanistan.
