Massachusetts House speaker criticizes prosecutors

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - House Speaker Robert DeLeo is ratcheting up his criticism of U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz, saying federal prosecutors have persecuted him in an attempt to salvage their case in the trial of former state probation commissioner John O'Brien and two deputies.

DeLeo has not been charged in the case or called to testify.

The Winthrop Democrat said that hasn't stopped prosecutors from alleging a bribery scheme in which O'Brien provided DeLeo, then chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, with jobs to fill at an electronic monitoring facility.

DeLeo said he's never traded jobs for votes and prosecutors couldn't indict him or any other elected official because there's no evidence.

DeLeo said if there was evidence, prosecutors should have called him to testify and given him a chance to defend himself in court.
