Lowell man denies fatal stabbing

Posted: Updated:

LOWELL, Mass. (AP) - A Lowell man has been ordered held without bail for allegedly stabbing another man to death during a drug transaction.

Robert Weidman was held after pleading not guilty to murder Monday in the death last Thursday of Hector Almedina.

Authorities say the 27-year-old Almedina called his girlfriend to tell her he was dying after he was stabbed. He was later taken to Lahey Clinic in Burlington where he was pronounced dead early Friday. Police say the Lawrence man had been stabbed in the chest several times, including once in the heart.

Police say Almedina supplied the 50-year-old Weidman with cocaine.

The Sun (http://bit.ly/U6LHKN ) reports that Weidman told police that Almedina tried to stab him during a drug deal.

Weidman is due back in court Aug. 18.
