Thousands flock to CountryFest, many suffer from heat exhaustion

SCHAGHTICOKE, N.Y. – There were more than 15,000 people at CountryFest on Saturday and many have suffered from heat exhaustion.

Thousands of people were in an open area during the day, with the sun beating down on them, causing issues with heat exhaustion. Some had to be taken to the medic tent and some of them had to be taken to the hospital.

"We were really inundated with a lot. I mean we were processing people at an incredible rate,” said Mike Ryan with the Hoosick Valley Fire Department and EMS.

Ryan, a firefighter and EMT, says the issue was the hot weather, coupled with people drinking alcohol and not enough water. The issue became so large, they had to call for outside help.

"We had to bring in more ambulances out of the city, Clifton Park, Half Moon to supplement the numbers that we already had,” said Ryan.

While some were suffering from the sun, thousands were able to enjoy the country music and party atmosphere. But the emergency heat issue was another sight to see for Taylor Merriam.

"I've seen a few people taken out in  ambulances and some people like passed out drunk and I feel like they aren't hydrating enough,” explained Merriam.

Lindsay Elliot of Troy says she tried to find cover from the heat, but given the open fair grounds, it wasn't easy.

"It was really hot the sun there's no shade. There's no place for them to take shade so everyone's in the sun so it was really hard. Everyone was being taken out like quick,’ she said.

The most serious issue at the fairgrounds on Saturday was that fact that some people had suffered from heat stroke but thankfully, none of those symptoms were life threatening.
