Infant killed in crash on I-81 in New York

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - State police say an infant was killed in a crash on Interstate 81 near Watertown.

They say the 5-month-old was a passenger in a sport utility vehicle that rolled several times after hitting an embankment around 5:30 a.m. Saturday.

State police say the driver, 21-year-old Quartez Smith, may have been drowsy.

They say the 2003 Chevy Trailblazer became airborne after hitting the embankment and struck a portable trailer holding an electronic road sign in a highway U-turn.

Smith and two adult passengers were treated for minor injuries at a hospital.

The infant was airlifted and pronounced dead at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse.

All four were family members from Virginia. They were traveling home from visiting relatives near London, Ontario.

State police say an investigation is ongoing.
