WATERVLIET, N.Y. -- A new Price Chopper finally stands where St. Patrick's Church was located, despite years of residential protests.

There's a lot of history that is behind the property, and many residents were upset when they heard the church was coming down.

The story stretches back to September 2011 when the Albany Roman Catholic Diocese decided to close down the church as a part of a restructuring plan. The Diocese said it would be too costly to repair the church and proposed selling the property. That’s when Price Chopper expressed their interest in buying the property and expanding in the city. The supermarket said its existing 2nd Avenue location was too small and outdated, and that building a new store on this site would allow them to double in size and create more jobs.

But, supporters of the church did not want it torn down, instead they wanted it to be restored and preserved. Residents voiced their concerns at a number of common council meetings. But, in the end, the Watervliet City Council voted unanimously to rezone the church property.

Friday is the grand opening of the Price Chopper in the city, and a ceremony will be held at 8:30 a.m.
