GUILDERLAND, N.Y. -- New York State Police say one person was killed in an accident on I-87 South near the Crossgates Mall entrance ramp Wednesday.
A preliminary investigation has revealed that a single vehicle was involved as it traveled southbound on I-87 near the ramp. The driver, whose name is being withheld pending complete notification of next of kin, apparently attempted to change lanes in traffic and subsequently struck a guide rail near the mall entrance ramp.
The vehicle became airborne and landed on the driver's side, coming to rest in the center lane. The vehicle caught on fire due to a fuel leak as local fire departments responded and attempted to contain the fire.
State Police officials continue to investigate the cause of the accident and reconstructing the scene. All southbound lanes of I-87 were closed south of the I-87/I-90 exchange Wednesday evening for several hours.
