NYC police see risks with drones' popularity

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - New York City police say some recent incidents involving wayward drones show that the popularity of the remote-controlled aircraft poses potential risks.

The head of the NYPD's counterterrorism bureau says none of the incidents was sinister. But he has suggested terrorists could be looking at drones as a tool in plots against the city.

Drone buffs say the doomsday scenarios are far-fetched. They say most pilots are tech junkies who use the drones to take aerial photos.

The most serious mishap came Monday when a crew member of an NYPD helicopter spotted a flying object headed in its direction. According to police, the chopper had to change course to avoid a collision. The drone's owner was arrested on charges of reckless endangerment.
