Proctor's marquee goes digital in time for October musical

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Proctor’s marquee in Schenectady is going digital.

The bulbs came out this past week and construction began on Tuesday to remove the whole sign. Once it is replaced, it is promised that the marquee will look almost the same.

Over the years, it has taken a ladder or lift and a person to place each letter by hand. The last change took place on July 1, before the marquee is to be replaced with a digital sign.

Jef Hetrick, the Housekeeping and Events Setup Manager at the theater, has been with Proctor’s for 21 years, and he was one of only a few in charge of the changes.

"It' kinda neat, i'm kinda honored I guess to do the last change," said Hetrick

Safety, rust, and aging are reasons for the replacement, according to the Proctor’s Creative Director, Richard Lovrich.

"It needs to be painted. The led bulb housings are falling apart," said Lovrich.

The renovation is part of a $250,000 project.

Other signs will be digitized and other parts of the theater will be insulated and painted.

The bulbs will now be replaced with modern energy savers, though some say they will miss the historical feel.

"They should keep it original. Keep it the same way it's been for years," said Mike Prendergast of Averill Park.

Proctor’s opened in 1926 with their original marquee. After the marquee was taken down in the 1940s, it was built to look like the original again in 1983.

Lovrich said the light bulbs will look a little different for those who want to look close, but the chasing pattern will remain.

Although it is soon to be digital, they will still be using block lettering that resembles the hand assembled ones.

Construction is expected to take from four to eight weeks.

The theater hopes to have it completed in time for the opening of the musical “Newsies” on October 11.
