LAKE LUZERNE, N.Y. – A popular river rafting company in Warren County says they will be closed until further notice after a bus crash killed one of their employees.

State Police say the Tubby Tubes bus overturned at the intersection of Thomas and River Roads on Saturday afternoon.

According to police, a 15-year-old river guide was killed after being thrown from the bus. The Hadley-Lazerne High School Principal confirmed with NEWS10 ABC that the teen was Hunter Scofield, a student at the school.

Family and friends described Scofield as a great kid who was athletic, bright, and kind. A small makeshift memorial has been set up at the crash site for Scofield.

The bus was carrying 34 people, who were on their way to the Hudson River for a tubing excursion.

Police are still investigating the cause, but they do say that an initial investigation points to a mechanical problem with the bus.

Tubby Tubes released a statement on the accident on Sunday night.

“It is with great sadness that we at Tubby Tubes offer our deepest condolences to those involved in yesterday’s accident, and in particular to the family of the employee who tragically lost his life. Tubby Tubes will remain closed while the investigation into the cause of the accident continues."

"He was a well-rounded individual and he had a great family. A long list of Scofield's in the area,” said the teen’s neighbor, Tabitha Gilbert.

Gilbert says her son was friends with Scofield. His family declined an interview, but says they are devastated.

"It is a freak accident and it just -- I'm just thankful my son wasn't there because these are summer jobs in the area. They're close by, that's what you want your kids to do,” said Gilbert.
